I saw Mindgame last night, a 2004 anime directed by Masaaki Yuasa. It's based on a manga by Robin Nishi. Have any of you guys seen it? I'd only ever heard of it at the John Kricfalusi blog, where some poor anime fan was frying to convince John K that it was awesome. It's visually stunning and funny. The story seems to lose its way about two thirds in, but the visuals keep it interesting. Visually the film reminded me of Waking Life, Aeon Flux, and Hair High, as well as Samurai Champloo which the director worked on as well. The subtitles tried a little bit too hard to be cool, but overall were quite good. Recommended.

Never heard of this one, and normally I've got an ear to the ground for the arthouse type anime releases.
I'll keep an eye out for it though. _________________ Avi - The cute & fuzzy galactic overlord |

it's really good!
Some Anime Society members who came in part way through deemed in in-appropriate, 'disgusting' and other such things, but contextually everything fits together well. It's the most ridiculously novel "feel-good" film I've probably ever seen. _________________ - Barboxacon Salenmo |

Ok, just watched it...
Just fucking wow.
There's something in the animation and sheer ridiculous nature of it that makes me think Nishi is a big Ren & Stimpy fan. And also an amazing egocentric for not only writing himself into the plot, but cheating death and meeting God... That's like the kind of thing Iwould do!
The fairly grounded reality of it (well, at least until the whale) I thought was really good, and this style could have been used to tell a serious biopic tale, because that's how the film feels like it's playing out to that point: That Nishi is actually telling his life story (and one could well assume a hallucination about meeting god when a gang member has a gun up your arse), but over all I felt that the film got too "Hey, let's drop some acid and see what we come up with" after they got into the whale.
The whole "live by your convictions and don't be such a fucking pussy" moral of the story is a little bit cliched for, well, anime as a whole, but it's still a good point and a rather enjoyable movie none the less.
I think it's something I going to try and push on the screenings coordinators for Manifest... Probably for "educational Friday" where we have the stuff that has cultural/educational value. _________________ Avi - The cute & fuzzy galactic overlord |

From the shining reviews this has quickly become one of my top-most-want-to-watch-anime. _________________ IMPORTANT CONNEX ANNOUNCEMENT: Do not ride on the top of trains. Ride inside trains.
